BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the world where everything can be controlled and operated automatically, there are still a few important sectors in the country where automation has not been adopted or not been put to a full-fledged use, perhaps because of several reasons one such reason is cost. One of the fields where automation has to be enhanced is agriculture. Agriculture has been one of the primary occupations of man since early civilizations and even today manual interventions in farming are inevitable [Timmerman et al., 2003]. Greenhouses form an important part of the agriculture and horticulture sectors in the country as they can be used to grow plants under controlled climatic conditions for optimum produce [Stipanicev et al., 2003]. Automating a greenhouse envisages monitoring and controlling of the climatic parameters which directly or indirectly govern the plant growth and hence their produce [Gutlirrez et al., 2013]. Automation is process control of industrial machinery and processes, thereby replacing human operators [Tik et al., 2009, Ravishanker et al., 2014, Yang et al., 2010]. Early, human labor plays a very important role in monitoring farm and plants in this industry [Yoo wt al., 2007]. For some critical plants such as vegetables and flowers, they need 24 h attention from human so that the quantities and qualities of the plant can be controlled [Mainwaring et al., 2002, Kutlu et al., 1996]. The experience and knowledge acquired from it will provide a strong foundation for future development and growth of their plants [Ahonen et al., 2008]. However, because of increasing size in farming areas, this type of manual practice is apparently time consuming and labor-intensive [BeomJin et al., 2008]. However, with the improvement of management in agriculture techniques, modern telecommunication technologies can be implemented which provide great assistance for the industry [Anurag et al., 2008]. The most important factors for the quality and productivity of plant growth are temperature, humidity, light and the level of the carbon dioxide [Jime´nez et al., 2012, Roveti et al., 2001]. Continuous monitoring of these environmental variables gives information to the framer to better understand, how each factor affects growth [Yang et al., 2011].

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Plant irrigation is quite difficult and time consuming for a lot people especially working class people. Irrigation for greenhouse requires a reasonable amount of time because the crops growing in a greenhouse are special crops that require specific temperature, humidity and soil moisture such as tomatoes, strawberries and pepper [Jime´nez et al., 2012]. The automated irrigation and monitoring system reduces the amount of time required to water the plants. Irrigation of plant is very important in the greenhouse, the automated system solve the problem of irrigation There will be less human labour, wastage of water and poor growth of plants. This system is guaranteed to improve the growth of the plants and increase yield.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this project is to design an Automated Irrigation and Monitoring System for a Green House.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on using an automated irrigation and monitoring system for a green house.
